I was home for an entire week without access to a computer and it was horrible. I'm considering buying a laptop now. Any suggestions? I would love a Mac but probably need to get something cheaper. I did finally breakdown and buy a digital camera but I haven't really tried using it too much since I got sick shortly after buying it. I also now see the need now for a cell phone so may try and get one where I am just charged for minutes used.

Macs are appealing, but since you're not going to be running graphics-intensive games or whatever, I'd probably look for the cheapest HP or Dell that comes with wireless stuff (which they probably all do these days). It looks like the starting price for a Dell Inspiron laptop is around $500.

For cell phones, I use TracFone. You can usually buy one at the grocery store or at an Office Depot or Target, etc. It's prepaid and I get by spending $20 every few months. The "real" companies like AT&T seem to charge a fortune even for their prepaid plans, and the cheapest "regular" plans seem to be $45/month, which is kind of ridiculous for me, since I talk about one minute a day or something.

thx. I may go look at a Dell this weekend. Would you go to Best Buy or do I need to go to a Dell store.
I'm pretty stupid about this stuff. Will probably get the trac phone like you suggested. I ordered the camera from Vanns through Amazon and saved tax and shipping and it was 25 cheaper on top of that from the sale price from the camera store.

I had a Dell before I got my mac and it was a good laptop. I never had any major problems with it and they are a good price for what you get.

thx Miss Grimm. If you and my daughter both recommend it it must be good.

I'm considering the Dell Inspiron 1525 in Bubblegum pink. What do you think about that Tam? Why do they give you the option of mobile broadband for 150 extra? Why would I need that?

That looks like a good choice to me. I don't really know what the "mobile broadband" option is. They all come with a wireless card, which is what you need if you get wireless access at home, or to use your computer at a Starbucks or library or anywhere they offer wireless access.

Ah, OK, I looked at what they mean by that. It's a card so that if you get a wireless broadband plan, you could have wireless access everywhere. But you'd have to have both the card and the plan (through someone like Sprint).

Given that so many places already have wireless access anyway, I wouldn't bother with it. If you ever were to get such a plan, they'd have a card to sell you with it anyway.

I went through all the options if you order through the Dell website (which is usually how I do it) and I didn't see anything that I thought you would need extra unless you want MS Office or a printer.

Looks good to me :-)

Oh, and I think that Sony Vaio from Vann's would be fine too.
