Ginger

Ginger came into my life (and Sparky's) on June 12, 1998. I had her put down today. RIP sweet puppy.

Ginger

I found out last week that Ginger has congestive heart failure. She is on 2 medicines but will probably not live too much longer. She is 15 and has lived a good and long life. Here are a few of my favorite pictures of her with Gracie, Sparky and Rosie. I decided to post this now because I know I will be too sad to do it after she is gone.

Rosie

I had planned to take Tuesday and Wednesday off to vote, volunteer at the polls, and hopefully celebrate. When I got home from work on Monday night Rosie was really sick. She had been fine in the morning but that's how things go with dogs. Tuesday I took her to the Dr. and they discovered a massive ear infection. After spending about 700 on her we went home. When I woke up this morning her ear was bleeding and there was blood all over the bed so we spent 2 1/2 hrs. at the vet and another almost 300. The whole right side of her face near her ear is swollen and she may have a burst ear drum. It's so swollen they can't even look inside her ear to see. She's on antibiotics, pain meds and a topical antibiotic which has to be applied to her ear daily after cleaning. Poor Rosie. She also turned 13 on Tuesday but we didn't get to have our usual cupcake celebration. As soon as she's well we will. Ginger is 14 1/2. Hard to believe my puppies are so old.

Ginger and Her Kitty

Although Ginger doesn't look too happy here, I think she really enjoys it when her kitty comes in for a visit.

Rosie

Rosie was adopted on this day in 1999. Here are some pictures from the first weekend she spent with us on John's farm in Anderson.

The whole pack.

She still can't sit up straight.

How we spent our Thanksgiving

This is how Rosie and I spent our Thanksgiving. We were really thankful that our mom (fourdogmom) was invited over for dinner by some friends from our old neighborhood so we could get some much needed rest.

Ginger

I almost became onedogmom this weekend when my sweet little Ginger ate a leaf from an oleander plant at my apt. complex. She has been at the vets office since yesterday morning and will probably have to stay at least another day. They have run lots of tests and it looks like she'll be ok but when I visited her yesterday she sure didn't look ok. I'm not even sure she knew I was there. Oleander is one of the most deadly plants for dogs and is often fatal. She threw up the leaf which may have saved her life.

Friday 10/21: Ginger came home Wednesday night. I stayed home yesterday to make sure she was ok. So far so good. This morning she was back to her old self. She has 3 medications she has to take 1 hour apart so we started at 5 am with the first, then one at 6 and the last at 7. The bill from my vet was over $1300 but well worth it. So glad I sold my house and have some money from that to cover dog emergencies.

Ginger with her Cats

Ginger loves our little cat family and they seem to like her too. She enjoys finishing up the cat food they leave on the plate and they like playing with her leash. When I open the door every morning they all rush in the apartment but only the male siamese lets me pet him.

Ginger

Last night the gray kitty I call Cinza wandered into our apartment and she and Ginger touched noses. That reminded me of this really cute picture of Ginger touching noses with a calf on John's farm in Anderson. Of course as soon as the calf's mother saw what was going on she charged and Ginger and I had to run to get out of her way. The farm where we spent so much time is in the middle of all the wild fires in Grimes County and the surrounding areas and I have no idea whether the house is still there or has burned down. I'm pretty sure the beautiful pond that Ginger and the other dogs used to swim in has dried up. We haven't had any rain in this part of Texas in months and have had record breaking temperatures.

Ginger (or why I work 2 jobs)

I took Ginger to the vet a few weeks ago for a urinary infection. While examining her they discovered a rather large tumor on her rectum which was probably causing her a lot of pain. The vet told me there was only a 25% chance it was malignant so I decided to have the surgery done even though she is almost 13. Today I found out that it is benign so I made the right decision. She is feeling great and is back to being the happy active puppy she has always been. I've spent almost 2,000 in vet bills in the last 2 weeks but it's easy to see why it was worth it when you look at that precious face.

Dogs news

Here is Rosie the pug being really lazy. I really wish I could relax like this.
A few months ago I had to have Gracie put to sleep and then a few weeks after that I did the same with Sparky. I haven't blogged about Sparky because it was pretty sad. He was my first dog and practically perfect. If I had a scanner I would scan some of his pictures and put them on my blog. Now I am down to 2 dogs, Ginger and Rosie. Having 2 dogs is a lot easier but I still miss Sparky and Gracie. I'm really scared that something is going to happen to the remaining 2. I'm not ready for that. Because I only have 2 dogs and because I'm stressed about money all the time I'm planning to sell my house and move to an apt. or buy a condo. I've been asking my neighbors if they know anyone who wants to buy a house. Tonight one of my neighbors who lives a few streets over stopped by because she's a real estate agent. I feel a lot better after talking to her. Her husband built a beautiful fence for me a few years ago. I didn't know at the time that he lived in the neighborhood. She's coming back over tomorrow.
